<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">I know there are still some skeptics out there who may not understand why you should change your marketing to be more receptive to women. Do men even matter?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Let me start by saying, OF COURSE THEY DO. What I’m going to share with you about marketing to women will only ENHANCE your relationship to your male customers. It will make your marketing much stronger without having to invest more money in what you already have.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Let’s jump right in. I’m just going to throw some numbers out at you.</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">American women spend about $5 trillion annually&#8230;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Women head 40% of all households</span><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">&#8230;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Women represent 50% of Internet users and buy more online than men…</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Even though many households are dual paycheck, women still spend 80% of both combined incomes…</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">70% of all new businesses are opened by women.</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><br />
Fun stuff, huh? But it wasn’t always this way, and it’s important for YOU as a marketer to understand what’s changed so dramatically over the last century so you can get into the psyche of the new market.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">So sit back and indulge me while I give you a brief, but important history lesson. Ready?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Okay, adult women living in 1925-1942 were called the “silent generation.” If they went to college it was to meet a man. They were expected to stay home and take care of the household while the men worked. <strong>THIS IS IMPORTANT: This is also about the same time many of the advertising methods still used today were born…obviously targeting the market with the paycheck – MEN</strong>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Then during World War II, women were encouraged to join the workforce as a support for America. For the first time many women were making money. When the men came back, things were never quite the same. Of course that’s what literally gave birth to the Boomer generation (1945-1964) who are a huge market by themselves today.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">By the 1980s, it was commonplace for women to work – even a little odd if they didn’t. Married households got hooked on two incomes. Today women have choices they didn’t have then:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>More education</strong> – women take home 57% of college degrees, giving them more earning power;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Ability to choose whether or not to have a family and WHEN</strong> – access to birth control. No more keeping them barefoot and pregnant;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Divorce is more socially acceptable</strong> – women no longer can rely on men as the sole providers. A man is not a plan.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Access to credit</strong> &#8211; believe it or not, in 1973 a woman couldn’t get a bank loan without her husband’s or her father’s signature;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>The right to own property</strong> – as late as 1981 many states wouldn’t allow a female to jointly own property. Only the male was listed on the deed.<br />

</ul>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">So that’s WHY the face of marketing as changed so drastically today, and why women have so much more buying power.<br />

<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Organic results via social media and copy. Women in particular respond very well to social media and sharing instant thoughts that can develop into conversations. Here are a few ways you can use copy in social media to build exposure and stimulate create dialogue:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"> <span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>1)  Ask questions</strong>.  The point of social media is fan communication. We all like to share our experiences (<em>especially women</em>) so at least once a week post an question and ask for feedback. Bonus points if it’s relevant to your business but I find that most discussions stem from questions about food, health, pets, kids…things that we all have in our everyday lives. Remember, you’re not SELLING from social media. You’re building a relationship.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>2)  Post business questions to your community</strong>. When you reach out to them they feel important and are eager to give feedback.  It builds trust shows you’re interested in feedback, and positions you as the expert.  It also creates conversations between customers and builds community. And don’t be afraid to get some negative responses. It’s better to address them in public and hopefully win a new fan.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>3)  Post videos</strong>. More and more videos are getting traffic. And they’re easy to do. You don’t have to have a lot of production value (<em>although that’s viable as well</em>). Just use your smartphone or the famous flip camera at <a href="http://www.theflip.com" target="_blank">www.theflip.com</a>. Keep em short…2-3 minutes max. Don’t worry about stumbling or making mistakes. Video helps your community relate to you.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">4)  Create a list</strong>. Get your community excited by asking for their nominations for a prestigious title. I did this completely by accident 3 years ago when people at an event I was hosting weren’t familiar with a lot of the gurus and experts I knew who helped shape my marketing skills. They asked for a list of the “cool people”. I created the list for them. Then decided to post it. It got a lot of excited feedback from the people who were on it. And there was some backlash for people who weren’t. But it was MY list. I’ve continued to create this list now for 3 years called the *<strong>50 Coolest Marketers of ____ Year</strong>*.  What’s really cool about this list is the marketers are proud and refer to or tag my list in FaceBook so it’s not only useful but gets a lot of traction.</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>5)  Women can be bought</strong>. I don’t mean that in a negative way but who doesn’t like a bargain. Why not offer just your social media friends a special code for a discount. You don’t have to just restrict this to social media by the way. I recently got a coupon in the mail from <em>Sephora</em> offering me $20 off when I spent over $100 online with them. I was on that computer racking up makeup sales within minutes.  Give them a “secret password” to use at the counter for an extra 20% off.  Invite them to a special cocktail hour with a renowned author. Try doing a customer appreciation special every month or so.  Once they catch on, word-of-mouth will spread, particularly with women. Ta dah…you have more raving fans!</span></p>

(<em>Hint: Valentine’s Day happens next Tuesday, February 14. Be prepared.</em>) While we were in that part of the world, he took me to my favorite store for workout gear – <em>Lululemon</em>. THAT cheered me up! </span></p>

What&#8217;s more is women talk a lot to their friends. They talk about what they like and they talk about what they don&#8217;t like.</span></p>

A research nut, he reports that his average male client recommends him to 2.6 others. On the other hand, his <strong>women clients recommend him to an average of 21 times to other people</strong>. My husband thinks I&#8217;m joking when I can&#8217;t remember how to use one of 5 remotes to work the TV versus the DVD versus the radio versus the Tivo. It&#8217;s enough to make my head spin.<br />

<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"> <strong>Women are extremely loyal</strong>. Not only that they tell EVERYONE about their experiences. Good or bad.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">If you&#8217;ve messed up, the best thing you can do to get her loyalty is great customer service. Customer service is very underrated these days because we&#8217;re all so busy. But it&#8217;s never been more important.</span></p>

<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Women are truly fascinating creatures!</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">I was sitting in the salon the other day enjoying an incredibly luxurious foot soak when I was struck by what I was overhearing. One of the hairdressers was telling her client the laundry list of things she was doing or was responsible for in a given day. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">She explained how she had to get up early to get her kids ready and take them to daycare and school, drive through an hour of traffic to get to work, pick her kids up and take them to whatever activities or lessons they were doing (another hour plus in traffic), make dinner, clean up the house, pay attention to her husband (<em>yes she actually used that exact phrase</em>) and get everyone ready for bed. She sounded tired just talking about it. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">I can relate to this kind of day – hey I’ve got 2 kids, a husband, and a million dollar company to run too – but what struck me was that after she gave the play by play of her day, nearly every other woman in the room chimed in with enumerations of her own. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">In fact, it soon became clear a competition was about to unfold over who had the most stressful life. While I was tempted to share with them the concept that focusing on the stress actually makes it more powerful, I decided to simply sit back and observe. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">And, I kept coming back to the same question in my head…<strong>what impact does all of this stress have on women’s buying decisions?</strong> Probably a lot more than you think.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>A woman’s stress filter drives the way she behaves, decides and shops.</strong> It’s true – and whether you like it or not, her stress is standing between you and your marketing success.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Just try placing your product and your ad messages in the middle of that hairdresser’s day and see what happens. If you do it and you haven’t connected with her on an emotional level by speaking to her stress and her desire to make her life easier, you might as well throw your money in the toilet. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">So what do women want? They want…</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Women have been getting all the attention lately as being 85% of the buying market. Turns out they have a lot more impact on big ticket items than marketers and copywriters used to believe! Part of that shift is etched in history and part of it is in psychology.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>But what about the men</strong>? Where are they in this mix of purchasing power?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Well relax. The men aren’t going anywhere. They still make a significant contribution to the economy. But you simply need to market to them differently than you market to women. And it’s not just changing the colors or the presentation.  </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Both genders are very different biologically, psychologically and socially so you need to do your homework.</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Here are some tips to keep in mind when reaching out to men:</span></strong></p>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Men have a shorter decision-making process.</strong> They aren’t “browsers” if they are looking for something specific. Once they find it, they don’t necessarily belabor over the cost or comparison-shop. As a marketer you must be very clear about the features of what you offer and get to the point quickly.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>Men are linear thinkers while women think more abstractly</strong>. Male and female brains are actually wired differently to adjust for the differences. Women use both lobes of the brain at the same time, while men use only one at a time. So your copy needs to have a linear order when selling to men.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">“<strong>Problem, Agitate, Solve.</strong>” Dan Kennedy’s axiom is the best way to connect with a male prospect. Present the issue they want to fix, twist the knife, then show him your product is the answer to his woes. (<em>Women respond better to Red Hot Copy’s axiom, “<strong>Problem, Relate, Solve</strong>” making storytelling more powerful to build rapport with women prospects.)</em></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;"><strong>He wants to win!</strong> Men value coming out ahead of others. It goes all the way back to our hunter/gatherer roots when the best hunter got fed, lived in the best cave, and secured the best DNA model to have his offspring. Not winning means someone else gets the goods. Not acceptable. To get a male prospect’s attention, infuse a little healthy competition in your copy?</span></li>

<strong><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Female small business owners are expected to create millions of U.S. jobs while transforming the workplace environment.</span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">A remarkable trend is emerging in the U.S. job market&#8211;one that will greatly impact the workplace of tomorrow. Women are becoming the nation&#8217;s job-creation engine, starting small businesses and stimulating new jobs at a rate that outdistances their male counterparts and disproportionately exceeds their current contribution to U.S. employment.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">A newly published report by <em>The Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute</em> projects that female-owned small businesses, now just 16% of total U.S. employment, will be responsible for creating one-third of the 15.3 million new jobs anticipated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics by 2018.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Specifically, the Institute expects that women who own small businesses will create from 5 million to 5.5 million new jobs across the U.S. by 2018, and in the process transform the workplace of tomorrow into a far more inclusive, horizontally managed environment.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">This job growth projection is based on a rigorous analysis of converging factors, including the faster growth rate of female-owned vs. male-owned businesses; higher college graduation rates by women than men; and the predicted growth of industry sectors and occupations traditionally dominated by women. The projection also reflects the timely fact that female-owned businesses, more often self-funded than male-owned ones, are therefore less reliant on bank financing at a time when many say small business lending practices are more restricted.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">So what will the working environment within these companies be like?</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Findings from the index indicate that female small-business owners are more intensely focused on:</span></strong></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">It happened. I finally caught the holiday spirit! John and I put up our tree and wound the garland around the staircase. He hung a zillion lights on the border of our house and picture window. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">I even switched my radio station from my favorite alternative rock and roll station to one that plays Christmas music non-stop. I can even work to Christmas music in the background without getting distracted. My faves are the crooners and big band versions.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Hey, that reminds me…I found a cool free site for music called <a href="http://spotify.com" target="_blank">Spotify.com</a>. It has just about every song you can think of on there for free. I’m not sure exactly how they get around musician’s royalties, but they do. Even the creator of <em>FaceBook</em>, Mark Zuckerberg says, “Spotify is so good!” Now if that’s not a resounding recommendation, I don’t know what is!</span></p>
