Hi there,

What an amazing weekend it was for me! I got to hang out with my sons who are home from college. My gourmet chef hubby prepared a phenomenal brunch for the whole family. Then we were off to see “The Avengers” movie.

By evening I was traveling to discuss my next new project with some amazing clients. Sometimes it pays off to be entrepreneur. Yesterday I spent the day at transformational guru Arielle Ford’s house by the ocean in La Jolla, California. Being so close to the ocean was stunning and inspiring. I was there as part of a client project pow wow. While I love the freedoms we get from today’s almost magical technology, it’s still a different experience to meet people face-to-face.

Inside I’ve written an article on Social Media that could stimulate your own creative instincts.

Meet me on FaceBook.

Warmly,

Lorrie

Why You Need To Work Your Fan Page In FaceBook

Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

When we start out on FaceBook we usually start a “personal profile.” We find friends from high school, college, past jobs, relatives, neighbors…the list is endless of who turns up there.

Those of us who also use FaceBook as a business presence run into a problem with we reach the magic number of 5,000 friends. There is no limit to friends on a “fan page.” Those of us with lists of 20,000+ subscribers get a little cheated.

At least that’s how I felt when I first had to create my fan page. It seemed silly to run two pages with many of the same people.

But the more I’ve learned about FaceBook and their goals, the more I see them supporting the marketing evolution of fan pages much more than the profile pages. FaceBook’s expansion of fan pages has made them nearly as interactive as profile pages (except for the email aspect which frankly I’m not a supporter of anyway). The success of the fan page ultimately depends on how active the owner of the fan page chooses to be.

As a marketer I highly recommend you get your own fan page ASAP. Here are a few reasons why.

Your status updates on fan pages end up in your network’s news feeds. That means more exposure if you’re active on your fan page and a viral growth is inevitable. It wasn’t always that way for fan pages (only for personal pages). But as a support for fan pages, FaceBook made that aspect available as well.

Fan pages can be picked up by search engines. Personal FaceBook pages are blocked behind the login whereas fan pages are not. That means they can be indexed in search engines like Google and increase your SEO ranking. As an added bonus, any links on your fan page can also be indexed.

You can send updates to your community from a fan page. Much like when email used to be the king of online contact, FaceBook is rapidly taking its place in many markets. This is the social media method of building a ‘tarketed’ list. Use this feature to share events, products, and points of interest.

Getting your business name as part of your FaceBook fan page is a strong SEO tactic. Just like in the domain craze when people were squatting on high-profile names in order to sell them back to them, a similar phenomenon could happen in FaceBook. That’s why it’s critical to grab your own vanity URL whether or not you plan to use it now.

Here’s how to get your vanity URL.

Go to: http://www.facebook.com/username and you will be prompted to enter a vanity name. Do this carefully. FaceBook doesn’t allow you to change or transfer usernames or URLs, probably in an effort to avoid the extortion businesses experienced in the past for pre-purchased URLs. (Note: Fan pages need at least 100 fans to get a vanity URL.)

The bottom line is FaceBook has added many new aspects to fan pages, making them more robust. In the long run, as a business you want to begin and promote yours as soon as possible. Just be sure to be an active participant in your own fan page.

Hi there,

Just got back last night after a rousing copywriting event I spoke at. It was a small, boutique workshop that was very hands-on. As always, it’s great to hang out with any of the copywriting fraternity. The double-entrendres, word games, and teasing are non-stop. It’s a blast.

Being around like-minded people reinvigorates me. It also reminds me how many different gifts we bring to the table. After researching and testing how to write copy to sell to women for over 7 years now sometimes I think everyone else knows what I do. It’s simply not true.

The differences between masculine and feminine copy are super subtle but incredibly powerful. When I showed attendees the difference they were blown away at the areas they were missing the mark to get women to buy. Do you ever feel that way?

If you do you might consider investigating my She Factor Copywriting Bootcamp Do It Yourself program at http://bit.ly/redhotdiy. It shows you where the pitfalls are and how to avoid them.

Since my live event calendar is empty for the rest of the year (ON PURPOSE – I don’t plan to do more than a few events annually any more). This is as close as you’ll get in 2012 to learning from me personally. So let’s get your copy tuned up and speaking to your market ASAP. There are people out there who need your help!

Warmly,

Lorrie

Building Strong Trust and Rapport in Your Own Market

Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

My own past stories and myths behind my business model are pulled from my idea of meaningful ways to understand my market. I show women how to talk about their business passion in ways that build authenticity, trust, and rapport in their sales copy using templates, step-by-step techniques, and interaction through my Bootcamp.

Men and women are built differently but we are all subject to falling for a smooth marketing ploy. We are fooled every day and our fears make us pass on our best ideas. Men may keep a poker face but they also fall for the deal of the day. If we’re science projects for the behavioral economics experts then let’s make sure you have the tools to follow the path like we’ve seen on television by sticking to the green line marking your way to success. Just stay on the path.

In your business you have mere seconds to gain trust and rapport from visitors to your website. It’s essential, then, that your marketing copy includes not only the facts and figures about the product you’re promoting, but also the emotional effect that a product will have on your prospect.

How will it make her feel?

Does it make her smarter, happier, more appealing to others, less worried, more relaxed, have peace of mind, and so on?

Tell your buyer how the product will improve her life. Your attention to her emotions will also improve your bottom line.

We’re natural at building trust and rapport, and that’s what is required of copy. The bottom line is, that’s how I kind of got into the business. I was learning from these guys who tell you to use their formula, because it’s worked for over 100 years. This is what works, don’t mess with it. They were right; it absolutely worked. I got great results for my clients; great results for myself, but I started getting feedback from people who were drawn to me, who said – “I don’t like that long copy. I don’t read all that stuff; it just sounds so over the top and hype-y.”

I’ve built trust with my online friends who expect me to give them the very best answers to any questions. You see, you can’t use tricks to sell your product or service and expect loyalty. Trust and authenticity are not just good ideas but critical to women in particular.

What’s so wonderful about our world today is men are embracing more of their feminine or conscious side and women are experimenting with their masculine or power side. So we really have the best of both worlds. Yet, you can’t underestimate the hard-wired difference both genders will ALWAYS have with communication. So you want to come at your target market speaking the same language. With women, that language is about trust.

If you want to learn more about how to create copy that reaches women, check out my She Factor Copywriting Bootcamp Do It Yourself program at http://bit.ly/redhotdiy.

Hi there,

It’s important to keep up with trends in the marketing and copywriting world. One thing doesn’t change and that’s the importance of your copy. You may have heard me say that copy is the DNA of all marketing materials and it’s true. Imagine stripping away all the words from any of marketing or advertising efforts… without powerful copy it’s not likely you’ll connect with consumers.

I’ve known Lisa Manyon for over 7 years now. She’s studied with me, embraced the She Factor Copywriting System for Women and we’ve partnered on projects. When I heard about her new copywriting formula and marketing model for success I was thrilled to see her helping lead marketing efforts for women. You see I’ve been teaching how to market to women for years now and still women struggle with some of the techniques that have previously been taught.

Lisa’s going to share her philosophies (which are creating quite a buzz – she’s featured on the cover of Aspire Magazine and has been interviewed on four radio shows in a little over a week) on a free call on May 8th. I’ve invited her to share a guest article here because this topic is so important. If you’d like to learn more, join Lisa on a FREE call May 8th, 2012 at 4 pm PT/ 7 pm ET. To get the details visit this link and save your spot for the call “Find Your Voice & Make a Difference – How to Create Marketing Messages with Integrity” Click Here.

I’m teaching a live workshop in San Francisco to help participants create copy to connect with the gender who invented multi-tasking… the female consumer. Reserve your seat at the workshop and learn critical copywriting skills. Register Here. But if you can’t make it live, wrap your mind around my She Factor Copywriting System for Women (http://bit.ly/redhotdiy). It’s always a great resource you will find you can’t live without.

Warmly,

P.S. You know I’m a big supporter of women’s empowerment without putting down the guys. Finally there is a program that shows us how to tap into a side of most women we’ve ignored. Don’t miss this upcoming *free* call and tap into your Feminine Power.
A Copywriting Formula that FEELS Better and Really Works for Women

by Guest Author, Lisa Manyon

It’s no secret that men and women communicate differently and respond to different messaging. We’ve known for YEARS that women are influencing the majority of all purchasing decisions (85% + to be exact) yet marketers have been using the same antiquated techniques to attempt to capture our attention. It’s not working as well as it once did because the formulas created were intended to speak to men (not that there’s anything wrong with that IF that’s who you’re trying to connect with).

Women want to be heard not treated like a part of a herd. In fact, I recently read some startling statistics via an article on The Next Web that claims 91% of women feel like advertisers don’t understand them… (Interesting since we’re influencing over 85% of all purchasing decisions including male oriented purchases). Clearly marketers are missing the mark when comes to connecting with women.

When women (and yes, men, too) communicate on a deep level we feel validated and we know what we’re saying matters. The message we share resonates with others and the purpose of the exchange is understood. This happens with our partners, our colleagues and our tribe — the people who really “get” us. That’s a good feeling wouldn’t you agree?

When is the last time you felt like you had been heard? Not just slightly acknowledged but really heard. Think beyond your everyday conversations to a recent purchase you made. It could be a product or a service.

Why did you decide to buy from that particular company or individual?

Were you seeking a solution?

Did the marketing deliver on the promises being made?

Here’s what I find interesting. For years marketers, advertisers and copywriters have been pushing techniques that don’t really facilitate deep conversation or change. The intent has been to push a product, create more sales and basically treat people like numbers. People are not numbers. People are people. Since this is clearly a universal truth, doesn’t it make sense to create your marketing materials in a way that really connects on a deep level?

I believe it’s past time. That’s why I’ve introduced a new marketing model for success. I’ve found that the traditional copywriting formula of “Problem. Agitate. Solve.” isn’t resonating with women. Women are looking for solutions to their challenges. What’s really working is the new copywriting formula of “Challenge. Solution. Invitation™.”

In the traditional formula we highlight the problems, we’re taught to agitate that issue to focus on the pain points and then solve the problem. I believe people are in enough pain. We don’t need to be agitated to make a decision. In fact, especially for women, when someone acknowledges our challenges (and really understands where we’re coming from), provides a helpful solution and extends a friendly invitation, we’re more likely to take action. Nothing truly flows when it comes from a place of pain and fear…

It’s time to make sure your mission, values and the needs of your clients are taken into consideration… It’s time to create marketing messages with integrity that come from a place of true service.

Excerpt from the upcoming book, “Not Tonight Dear, I Have a Business to Run!” http://bit.ly/nottonightdearbook
by Dr. Patty Ann Tublin, Relationship Expert www.relationshiptoolbox.com

You’ve heard the gruesome statistics. Over half of all marriages will end in divorce. (Believe me, I know – my practice is full of couples on the brink of divorce if we don’t do something fast to quiet the raging fire.) Add to that the fact that statistically, the chances of succeeding in a small business are about one in ten, and in all marriages, you can bet that during some time in their marriage, one or both of the spouses is apt to say to one another: “Honey, I’ve been laid off,” or, “Sweetheart, what do you think if I quit my job and invest in an Internet business instead,” or, “Dear, I have bad news – that idiot boss of mine fired me!”, or “Sugar, let’s go into business together, what do you think?!”

Your relationships with your spouse and children are directly impacted when you take on the challenges of entrepreneurship and/or self-employment. Unanticipated financial, time and emotional stressors will influence your relationship with your spouse and children and jeopardize your chance for entrepreneurial success if you fail to create a family plan which anticipates the most likely challenges of self-employment. Married enterpreneurial wives and mothers do not have to sacrifice success in business in order to be happily married, and an effective parent!

If you are considering becoming an entrepreneur by either starting your own business, or purchasing a business with your spouse or significant other, or you are already committed to entrepreneurship as a lifestyle, you need help to beat the odds against divorce and business failure. Business experts stress the importance of creating a thorough strategic business plan before starting a new business. Women entrepreneurs and small business owners understand that we now need to learn how to prepare a family plan as well. Why? Women do not want success in business to come at the expense of happiness in their marriage and family life and relationships.

Women have created a sense of urgency for a family plan as we embrace entrepreneurship at twice the rate of men while populating more seats than men in graduate professional programs such as medicine and law. Women want, and actually demand, a life that creates financial and personal success. Entrepreneurship is the answer to this burning desire and the question to: “How do I create a life I love”? A well thought out family plan makes certain our business and relationship goals are in synch, supporting rather than being at odds with each other. The old paradigm of keeping your business and personal life totally separate from each other doesn’t work for entrepreneurial and self-employed women (and it never really worked all that great for men either). Today’s women seek to reconcile and blend their professional and personal lives, something which is made simultaneously easier and more difficult thanks to modern technology.

Eleanor Roosevelt said: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”. Women in today’s modern world are better educated and more driven for professional success than ever before. They are no longer bound by stereotypes with the new image of women represented quite well by the old commercial words: “we can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan and never let you forget you’re a man”. To do this we need a paradigm shift, one that acknowledges how our business success is influenced by success in our intimate and personal relationships.

If you are seeking a proven system uniquely designed to allow you to create a life you love; a life where you can create a family plan that complements, rather than competes against your business plan, invest in your marriage and business now by ordering your copy of “Not Tonight Dear, I’ve Got a Business to Run!” Just click on the following link http://bit.ly/nottonightdearbook “You are not able to get your message across on your web site or your sales pages alone. Order now and live the life you deserve! http://bit.ly/nottonightdearbook

Male, Female, Courtship And… The Dance!

by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

OK, I have a little confession. Although I’m a woman, I wasn’t always known as an expert in marketing to women like I am today. In my early days I stumbled a time or two on the differences between men and women, and how they respond differently to communication. I quickly realized when you miss these differences; it can be painful and costly.

As a copywriter and business owner I rely on sending the right message to the right market. I’m sure you’re probably no different. Let’s face it, there’s nothing more frustrating than wasting hours, even days, creating the perfect sales letter only to discover that you’re targeting the wrong people or communicating in a way that will alienate them or prevent them from taking action.

You have to start any communication by understanding the true essence of who you are speaking to.

And the truth is marketing segments have dramatically changed over the past century. Today, women hold about 80% of the economic buying power. It spans across all brands, products and services. (Sorry guys, I’m just stating the facts.)

Women, now more than ever have the final say in purchases ranging from cars to houses, home repair items, gifts, financial services and so on.

Interesting eh?

So let’s take a quick peek at how things have changed so dramatically since even as recently as 8 years ago, and what you need to do right to ensure you’re getting the highest return on your marketing efforts.

Allow me to share some statistics with you:

American women today spend about $5 trillion annually…

Women represent 50% of Internet users and buy more online than men…

Even though many households are often dual paycheck, women still spend 80% of both combined incomes…

More education – women take home 57% of college degrees, giving them more earning power…

And 70% of all new businesses today are opened by women…

The list goes on… So what does all this mean?

Well, it simply means if you are selling a product or marketing a business, a large majority of the time you’re communicating with a woman, and using the old-fashioned marketing techniques simply won’t cut it anymore. They know they hold the purse strings, and they stubbornly refuse to respond to the hype that used to be a slam dunk for sales in the past.

Men and women are just wired differently…

Trust and authenticity are not just good ideas but critical to women in particular. I’d like to give you an easy reference that’s going to help you in all your marketing decisions when it comes to reaching either the male or female market.

It comes down to how both genders are hard-wired to make not just purchasing decisions, but ALL decisions.

Psychology Today says, “We inhabit our high-tech world with Stone Age minds because there has not been enough time to change our psychology to match our environment.”

In other words we’re just cave people driving around in fast cars and talking on cell phones.

So true, now let’s look at why…

Biological Drives

His:

Fight competition for tribe status and survival

Provide food and shelter to mate(s)

Win choice of mate(s)

Pass on genetics

Hers:

Create community for support and security

Survive by being taken care of by stronger provider

Get along with everyone

Bond with other females

Raise healthy offspring

Biological Wiring

His:

Single-focused

Competitive

Needs approval

Hers:

Community-focused

Non-competitive

Needs acceptance

Another thing you should keep in mind when you’re marketing to women is we make decisions very differently than men because our brain circuitry is very different. Both genders have the same number of brain cells by the way…they’re just set up differently.

Men:

Use only one side of the brain at a time

Have 2½ times more brain space devoted to s-x than women

Have larger primitive areas of the brain that trigger fear and aggression

Women:

Use both lobes of the brain

Spend more time picturing things in their minds before making a decision

Have 11% more neurons for language and hearing

Have a larger hub for language and emotions.

Not to be offensive, but women’s brains are like pinball machines — all over the place — and men’s brains are like Pong– single focused.

Understanding biology is the key factor to your success in marketing.

See, that wasn’t so scary after all. Just be sure you know if you’re speaking to a man or woman when you prepare to deliver your marketing message.

Listen, it’s pretty simple really — women respond quicker to any form of communication if you’ve taken the time to understand what’s important to them at their core.

We like to be able to visualize how it benefits our community, so tell us a story we can emotionally relate to and justify with our belief system.

Once you take these basic steps your success rate will almost correct itself!

Warmly,

Hi there,

You know I’ve shifted my career to pioneer and study how women make buying decisions…what makes them tick. (Just because I’m a woman doesn’t mean I automatically know.) Today’s article sprung out of some observations I made as I was writing copy for a client marketing ONLY to women.

Now on to another shift in my life…Now that the boys are in college I find I spend even more time than ever with my husband, John. Sure we have our own sets of friends and activities but our favorite time is together.

Now don’t get me wrong…it’s not always perfect. We definitely disagree about some things. (And with us both being extremely passionate people, the fireworks do fly occasionally.)

But at the end of the day I’d rather be with him than anyone else, couch-surf, and snuggle. I can talk to him about literally anything. If everyone had the kind of honest and loving relationship we have I think the world would laugh and love a lot more.

The closest program I’ve seen to finding someone who is a true fit in relationships is Calling In “The One”. This free online call is this Saturday, April 21. The leaders are both amazing women: Katherine Woodward Thomas and Claire Zammit. Check it out.

A quickie plug for the event I’m speaking at next month in San Francisco, High-Speed Copywriting Workshop – I understand space is getting tight for this hands-on workshop event. It’s priced very reasonably for what you get. Plus you get to hang out with me and other well-known copywriters like John Carlton, David Garfinkel, Mike Morgan, and more. Hope to see you there!

Make this the week you want it to be.

The New Copywriting Rules When Selling To Women

by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

Having emerged as the pioneer for creating copy that speaks to and sells to women, I have to say I’ve discovered a lot of interesting differences between what USED to work with copywriting ‘rules’ and what IS working today. I call the phenomenon the She Factor.

Look, no one wants to be ‘sold to’. Customers want to feel they are making a good choice by doing business with you but they don’t like feeling pressure.

Women revolt when they feel someone is trying to manipulate them into action. (Probably a deep-seated resentment we have as generally being more physically vulnerable to men.)

This dilemma puts copywriters in a precarious position, because if you don’t lead a prospect toward the sale, often it doesn’t happen.

So if you as a copywriter don’t jump, scream, and wave your arms about how your product or service is the most excellent, supreme choice she can make, how will she possibly know to grab her credit card and give you those digits?

The truth is that kind of display is exactly what gets women to spin on their stilettos, and walk away from your offer. She wants authenticity and trust, not desperation and hype.

So how do you get her attention using the new copywriting rules of the She Factor?

Unfortunately it’s not easy. You must understand building confidence in your offer might take more time than you’d hoped. It’s worth it though because women are high-value customers who not only stay loyal to brands they love, but also tell all their friends about you.

Tom Peters had this to say about that:

“A major stockbroker told me he has oriented his practice toward female clients – with great success. A research nut, he reports that his average male client recommends him to 2.6 others. On the other hand, his women clients recommend him to an average of 21 other people. Yes, that’s two-point-six versus twenty-one.”

Here are a few tips I ripped out of the super secret She Factor Women’s Handbook to help you out…

Formatting matters. You know all those exclamation marks, yellow highlighting, and words in ALL CAPS…go a little sparse on those. Granted, they have their place but they also scream, “Hey, look!!! I’m using every marketing trick in the book to get your attention! SERIOUSLY! Buy my stuff!”

You’re asking for instant sales resistance when you go overboard. If your copy is strong, you don’t need to club her over the head with it.

Problem. Relate. Solve. No doubt you’ve heard the sales formula often credited to Dan Kennedy, “Problem. Agitate. Solve.” It means you lay out what pain your product solves early in the copy, twist the knife, and then reveal that (ta-dah) your product is the solution they’ve been looking for. Because women respond more to a sense of community than disturbance, it’s more useful to substitute the second step for a rapport-building angle.

In other words, an example of agitating is, “Without this widget you’ll end up losing everything and become homeless.” The relating makeover is, “I can relate to your widgetlessness. I was there before myself. It was a place of sad desperation.” When she relates to you, the trust factor soars, which often translates into sales.

The more you SHARE, the more you sell. As I’ve been cracking the code to what women respond to in copy I was surprised to discover how many of them read long copy when it’s thoughtfully written. This phenomenon breaks the rule I heard from women when I first heard the rumblings of how they had different needs from their copy. Women told me they ran the other way when they saw long copy, but that isn’t entirely true. When the copy is presented as an educational explanation of the problem, length doesn’t seem to matter. And, in fact, can be an advantage.

When you understand how to speak the language of women back to them and listen to their preferences, you are sure to improve your business.

Of course there’s a boatload of other tips I can give you but there is simply no way they can all fit in a short article.

Hi there,

Today on April 10 a few decades back my sister Elizabeth (or “E” as I call her) was born. Even though we’re several years apart we have always had a special connection. (You can tell by the picture that I was in a very AWKWARD stage and E couldn’t be any more adorable.)

Even though I had moments of taunting her with the promise of playing Barbies (only to completely blow her off) she has been my confidante and true friend our entire adult lives. So cheers, E! Make this the best birthday year EVER! I love you.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention that the room blocks for the event I’m speaking at next month expires in just 5 days – on APRIL 15.

The event is called the High-Speed Copywriting Workshop

http://bit.ly/highspeedcopy and you don’t want to miss it. (Right now it’s the only time this year I’m booked to do any live speaking.)

Trust me, this is one of those events people will be bragging about for years to come. You will literally be given all the tools and professional support you need to write your sales letter ON SITE with well-known copywriters like me, John Carlton, David Garfinkel, Mike Morgan, and more.

We’ll be looking over your shoulder, guiding you to crank out high-converting copy, and sharing our tricks to getting unstuck in any situation.

See you in person soon!

Warmly,

Meet Me In San Francisco!

One of the reasons business owners don’t make more money is that they’re baffled by the copywriting process. Nothing could be easier when you join me and my copywriting crew at the High-Speed Copywriting Workshop May 5 & 6 in San Francisco.

http://bit.ly/highspeedcopy

You’ll learn a super simple process for creating mouth-watering copy (even if you’re not a writer)! I’ll be sharing my expertise about marketing to women in my not-to-be-missed presentation:

Awesome copy cuts through the noise and gets you noticed, while boring copy makes your business a distant memory. Let’s demystify the copywriting process and get your sales copy finished over a weekend!

Why Women Should Be YOUR Target Market

by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

Women are high value customers because once they join your brand, and are happy, they are likely to stay loyal to you. What’s more is women talk a lot to their friends. They talk about what they like and they talk about what they don’t like.

Tom Peters writes in his book, Re-Imagine…

“A major stockbroker told me he has oriented his practice toward female clients – with great success. A research nut, he reports that his average male client recommends him to 2.6 others. On the other hand, his women clients recommend him to an average of 21 other people. Yes, that’s two-point-six versus twenty-one.”

So you definitely want to keep your female segments happy and loyal. Here are some devices you can use in your marketing right now to ramp it up.

Remember, women are primarily interested in community, people, relationships – there is no winner…only a village

Women base their opinions on personality whereas men base it on specifics. It makes sense when you go back to our instincts of what is important to a caveman versus cavewoman. Caveman is single-focused in order to procreate his DNA. Cavewoman is multi-focused in order to preserve her children & the security of the village.

This makes storytelling very powerful to women. Storytelling works with women AND men.

Use the ‘tarket’ model. Women want to know everything about each other so the more you SHARE, the more you sell. “Sex and the City” was entirely marketed to females and pulled in $55.7 million in its opening weekend, knocking “Indiana Jones” off at just $46 million. Women bought out entire theaters and invited their friends. They had “Sex and the City” parties. It was a madhouse.

Numbers, facts, and figures aren’t as important to women as they are to men. Women would much rather hear how someone’s life was improved by a product or service than by what percentage. Think back to making your copy more story-oriented.

Women just don’t care about the mechanical details so spending a lot of time on the features of a product ain’t gonna get our attention. YALE STUDY: Tested college students’ ability to program a VCR from written instructions. 68% of the men did it on the first try. Only 16% of the women did it. My husband thinks I’m joking when I can’t remember how to use one of 5 remotes to work the TV versus the DVD versus the radio versus the Tivo. It’s enough to make my head spin.

Women love to weigh in and give our opinions…quizzes, contests, surveys, essays…we love it! So using interactive media works great to hook women in.

Give her tips she can use with no strings attached. So infuse your copy with useful statistics or fascinating facts she can tell her friends. You want to build a relationship over time. Just like dating. You don’t just want to jump into bed…well maybe the guy does. But women want to be romanced and trust needs to be built.

Know what her values are. Making a difference in the world is a stronger position than looking younger/better (for a male…get it?) Women’s aspirations according to the Grey Advertising Study. Make the world a better place: 85%; See kids successful 83%; More time for me 82%; Travel 72%: Wealth 62%; Attractive 53%; Career 48%.

Also women like to know your business is out to make a difference. Like to know you’re involved in outreach programs beyond making money. So if you donate to a cause by all means let her know.

Women are extremely loyal. Not only that they tell EVERYONE about their experiences. Good or bad.

If you’ve messed up, the best thing you can do to get her loyalty is great customer service. Customer service is very underrated these days because we’re all so busy. But it’s never been more important.

Offer a discount to give us another try, write a long letter of apology and let them know you want their business back, make them feel cared about and special and you’ve got ‘em.

Hi there,

I am so digging the delivery of my final She Factor Copywriting Bootcamp class. What a group of sharp people! (I do have to admit I’m getting some grumbles that this is my last virtual class. Sorry, gang. I love teaching it so much but there are some new opportunities on the horizon that are pulling me.)

This week in class we’re going into great detail about the “tarket” which is a term I coined years ago. A tarket represents a single representative of your entire target market. A tarket is singular, while your target market is plural. The more you learn to write to ONE PERSON as a time, the more powerful and personal your copy will sound.

This session in Bootcamp we’re going to be discussing archetypes and how they impact your tarket. You can peek behind the curtain with this week’s article. Enjoy…

Also if you’re a copywriter or freelancer, this is your last call to invest in my mentor John Carlton’s Copywriting FREELANCE COURSE. As expected, the people who bought it are beyond pleased and already seeing results. (Hard to believe it used to run $995 and is so dang cheap right now. Truly was worth more than the original price!)

Remember to BE YOURSELF! You are wonderful!

Warmly,

Lorrie

“The She Factor Copywriting Bootcamp!”

by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

When you’re looking to address a certain market, you want to know as much about that market as possible…especially how they make their decisions.

Let’s take women for example.

There are all kinds of women fitting in all kinds of markets. It makes it difficult to pinpoint how to approach her with the copy.

• But when you understand her values,
• what makes her tick, and especially,
• how to speak in a way that encourages her to buy you have a much better chance of getting her to make a purchase.

Generally speaking there are four main archetypes people fit into. By archetype I mean how personality is hard-wired.

This isn’t a new concept. No matter what you call them…the four archetypes, temperaments, personalities (or even my term, tarkets) have been documented since 370 BC. Hippocrates who is the father of western medicine believed personalities were a result of the four “humours” residing in our bodies. He theorized our behavior and emotions depended on how much blood, yellow bile, black bile, or phlegm we had in our bodies.

Before I lose you, let me explain.

• Blood dominant bodies were cheerful.
• Yellow bile bodies were enthusiastic.
• Black bile bodies were somber.
• And phlegm bodies were calm.

So much credence was put on Hippocrates’ theory that it became the basis for Greek and Roman psychology.

I won’t bore you with the hundreds of years of evolution these four humours took but today they look remarkably similar to theories put forth by many others including Carl Jung, Myers-Briggs, and David Keirsey. There have been many different labels attached to each of the four archetypes throughout history. But the ones that make the most sense today in marketing are the most recent ones put forth by Keirsey.

Keirsey’s labels are Artisans, Guardians, Idealists, and Rationalists. When you understand the qualities of each category, marketing to them suddenly becomes easier.

Artisans tend to work well with tools. Most comfortable in the here and now. They have an attitude of if things go wrong, oh well…that’s the breaks. Brush yourself off and move on. They thrive on action and getting things done. They are risk-takers. Adjectives that describe Artisans are colorful, tactical, effective, playful, optimistic, daring, adaptable, impulsive. They are drawn to careers in the entertainment, sports, and political arenas. Artisans make up about 30-35% of the population.

As a tarket, the Artisan will look for emotional appeal and excitement in your copy to make her decision.

Guardians tend to be more traditionalists. They are sensible, down-to-earth, and just want to know the facts although they enjoy lively discussions about ideas. Guardians are extremely thorough and interested in things that will make their lives run smoothly. They are very social but take responsibility seriously. They appreciate respect though are a little reserved about bragging personally. Adjectives for Guardians are factual, law-abiding, logistical, managerial, stoic, cautious, dependable, helpful, concerned, trusting of authority. Guardians make up about 40-45% of the population.

As a tarket the Guardian is likely to read every word of your copy and print out the sales letter to check off each item she is getting.

Idealists (that’s me) believe we should all get along and take measures to collaborate. The world is full of potential and endless possibilities. They work on themselves for self-discovery and to be the best person they can possibly be. They hold themselves up to a higher ideal than they expect from others and can be hard on themselves if they feel they fall short. Adjectives to describe Idealists include imaginative, ethical, diplomatic, humanitarian, trustful, empathetic, kind-hearted, authentic, enthusiastic, intuitive, introspective. Idealists make up about 15% of the population.

As a tarket the Idealist wants to know what’s in it for her but ALSO what’s in it for her loved ones and family. Be sure to include that information in your copy for best results with an Idealist.

Rationals are problem-solvers. They’ve never met a puzzle that didn’t pique their curiosity. They are incredibly goal-oriented and very independent in their thinking. They won’t agree with someone just to be ‘politically correct’. They weigh out the information and make up their own minds. Adjectives that describe Rationals are theoretical, strategic, analytical, pragmatic, skeptical, determined, driven, independent, calm, curious, and logical. Rationals are actually pretty rare making up only 10% of the population.

As a tarket the Rational isn’t moved by emotional hype. Your best bet at attracting a Rational buyer is to be thorough in tangible offerings your copy makes.

The best way to write successful copy is to hit the needs of each archetype. For the Artisan you’ll need to make the copy engaging and fun. For the Guardian, you must be thorough and make the copy scannable. For the Idealist you must highlight the benefits to her community, not just to her. And for the Rational you want to be sure to cover every detail.

Do you know what your archetype is? Take the free test at www.Keirsey.com and discover if you are an Artisan, Guardian, Idealist, or Rational. This kind of self-discovery not only makes you a more aware marketer, but it also opens your eyes to how your target market may respond to your products or services.

Hi there,

Sometimes I have to pinch myself to realize I’m not dreaming. My business, Red Hot Copy, was launched over 10 years ago. It was a dream of mine to work from home being creative where I could be around to raise my sons every day.

As a single mom, I had tried the corporate rat race and was so depleted by the time I finally got home at 7 at night. By then the boys were winding down and getting ready for bed. I would get up the next day to fix breakfast, get them to school, then head into the office for the next 9 hours (plus 2 hours driving time) to make money for someone else. Something HAD to change. I’m beyond thrilled that those days are over!!!

Today one of my greatest joys is to help other freelancers and entrepreneurs find the same happiness and freedom I have. I hope you get some ideas out of this week’s article on creating a thriving business in copywriting.

And I also have to put in a plug for my mentor John Carlton’s Copywriting FREELANCE COURSE because it helped me so much personally. (I paid $995 for it back in the day…now the price is ridiculously less than that.) Carlton’s course was instrumental in getting Red Hot Copy off the ground. I know it can serve you well too.

Make this the week YOU want it to be.

Warmly,

by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

What is your definition of ‘thriving’? To me it’s designing a life that is exactly what you want. That’s why I love being an entrepreneur so much. Here is a thumbnail of what I’ve created in my life.

I get to travel with my husband and work from home. I get to create my own schedule and work out (almost) daily). I get to choose to eat healthy foods that are delicious. I get to hang out and play with my rescue dogs. Best of all I get to pick who I want to work with and not pick the ones I don’t want to work with. The end result is I get to make oodles of money doing something I actually love.

Here are some tips I use to keep my career on top of the world…and you can use them too!

Go to live events. The more expensive the better because that’s where you’re going to meet serious-minded people willing to invest in their businesses.

Publish something on a regular basis and start a database. Whether it’s a blog, an ezine, some social media crap or skywriting…just do it regularly. You need to stay in view, top-of-mind. Then when you’re ready for work, tap your list.

Grow a voice. Gary Halbert always said your copy can’t be too long. Only too boring. He never was. John Carlton never is. I can be (but not if I know Carlton will see it – then I amp up my game). The point is to be bold. Don’t be afraid to stand out. You’re supposed to, you creative genius, you.

Make a hit list. No, not literally. You should never write anything down that could put you in prison. But you SHOULD come up with your ideal top 10 list of people you would LOVE to work with. Then hound them relentlessly (but respectfully). Give them a free sample if you have to. That might be just enough to get them hooked.

Check Craigslist. There is ALWAYS work somewhere. If you need it badly enough, do a little digging. The Universe rewards people who get off their butts and take some responsibility.

I’m sure there are more. In fact, there are DEFINITELY more. But if you start here and continue to develop your skill you are sure to have a happy, thriving freelance business too.

by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

Women are truly fascinating creatures!

I was sitting in the salon the other day enjoying an incredibly luxurious foot soak when I was struck by what I was overhearing. One of the hairdressers was telling her client the laundry list of things she was doing or was responsible for in a given day.

She explained how she had to get up early to get her kids ready and take them to daycare and school, drive through an hour of traffic to get to work, pick her kids up and take them to whatever activities or lessons they were doing (another hour plus in traffic), make dinner, clean up the house, pay attention to her husband (yes she actually used that exact phrase) and get everyone ready for bed. She sounded tired just talking about it.

I can relate to this kind of day – hey I’ve got 2 kids, a husband, and a million dollar company to run too – but what struck me was that after she gave the play by play of her day, nearly every other woman in the room chimed in with enumerations of her own.

In fact, it soon became clear a competition was about to unfold over who had the most stressful life. While I was tempted to share with them the concept that focusing on the stress actually makes it more powerful, I decided to simply sit back and observe.

And, I kept coming back to the same question in my head…what impact does all of this stress have on women’s buying decisions? Probably a lot more than you think.

A woman’s stress filter drives the way she behaves, decides and shops. It’s true – and whether you like it or not, her stress is standing between you and your marketing success.

Just try placing your product and your ad messages in the middle of that hairdresser’s day and see what happens. If you do it and you haven’t connected with her on an emotional level by speaking to her stress and her desire to make her life easier, you might as well throw your money in the toilet.

So what do women want? They want…

Their lives to be made easier

Simple solutions

You to acknowledge her stress but not rub her nose in it

To be recognized and appreciated for everything she does

And, if you can do that (without ever insinuating that she’s bringing on the stress herself), she’ll happily pull out her wallet for you.

So, the next time you want to sell a product or service to women, think of the following questions:

Does your product or service save her time and or make her life easier?

Is it easy to use?

Is your copy (your message) easy to understand and are you clear about the benefits she’ll receive as a result of having whatever it is you’re selling?

Does it replace something she already has that’s not working (or maybe never worked)

Is it easy to find?

Does it work? How much social proof can you give her to show her it does? (She doesn’t have time to be your guinea pig)

Is it fun or smart?

Does it make her happy, relaxed, satisfied, excited?

This is true whether you’re selling an herbal remedy, a coaching program or a weeklong seminar. Look at your product or service through her stressed out eyes and see if it holds up. If not, get out there and do some research to find out what they really want. I’m sure there are plenty of women out there who’d be happy to help you out!
