And social media has all but consumed us so it’s important to manage your time.

In a recent interview Facebook’s Emily White explains how small businesses can attract new customers using Facebook. She’s right that there is no hidden elixir to ensure success with your social media campaign.

BUT there are absolutely some very basic, yet critical elements which must be at the foundation of all of your social media. (There are also pieces to the puzzle that take a bit more research and know-how.) If you’re still baffled by how to set up a powerful strategy in your business using social media, by all means read on.

This is how I save time on my social networking. There are literally hundreds of ways out there now, and more new ones every day. I’m going to share MY strategy with you and use what works for you.

  1. Plan two times during the day you will spend 5-10 minutes on social networking. Then stick to those times. It’s very easy to get sucked up in the social media world. You are in charge. I recommend using a kitchen timer so you don’t lose track of time.
  2. First visit Facebook to see what action has happened. Anyone write on your wall? If so, try to comment back. Anyone email you with something besides an ad or wanting something from you? (Remember, this is your social networking time…you can get an assistant to answer other requests.) Write back something very brief.
  3. Next update your Facebook status. You should have this connected to Twitter so you only have to do it once and it shows up in both places. Connect your status bar to your Twitter account. Find the link “create a badge” in the lower left hand corner of your home page. Next go to the “widgets home” and select the “Twitter link.”
  4. You can also do updated Tweets using your cell phone… just be careful not to get too caught up. It can get addictive!

Nicole Krug, of a DC-based firm comments that Facebook is primarily geared to personal social networks, so getting the scoop on how businesses can market to that audience can be a challenge.

I love it when visitors to my Facebook page leave me a “like” endorsement that says they like what I’m doing or what I’ve said.
