[Red Hot TNT] Spinning Your Copy with Storytelling

Hiddy Ho!

The weather is definitely autumn here in California. I love wearing warmer clothes this time of year. (Not a fan of any temps below 50 degrees Fahrenheit though. That’s why I live in California!)

Today in the U.S. it’s Veteran’s Day so I want to give a shout out to our folks who have served to keep us safe. Thank you.

I also want to remind you that TODAY is the last day to get a discount on one of my favorite programs, How To Write A Damn Good Story Online.

Just go here before midnight tonight, Wednesday, November 11thClick Here

Then use Coupon Code STORYTELLING30 in the box that reads “APPLY” then click it.

In fact, that’s what we’re covering in today’s article…but to be honest, it just scratches the surface of my program.

Now buckle up because the holidays are peeking around the corner at us. Get as much done for your business TODAY so you won’t be caught flatfooted in January.

P.S. I actually feel like Christmas came early for me. See I’ve been resisting signing up for ClickFunnels for over a year because “we can do it ourselves.” Was I crazy? It makes marketing 1000% push button easy. There’s more about it in the Resources section at the bottom of this ezine. And you can try it for free for two weeks. You’ll be hooked too.

Spinning Your Copy with Storytelling

By: Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Marketing Strategist

The day you hung out your shingle as an entrepreneur, you also took on the job of marketer. The minute you stop marketing yourself is when your profits dry up, so you may as well get used to your role.

Here’s a timeless rule of thumb for you…

The one universal rule to connecting humans psychologically is a good story. Like a spider weaving it’s attractive net drawing you deeper, spin your own story where your prospect can walk through it with you as if it already happened.

Remember, we all love a good story but make it brief. Get the reader entranced by your copy using a short story. Then connect it back to what you’re selling. Your prospect must visualize how their life will improve with your service.

Joseph Campbell captured the standard of storytelling templates in his book, The Hero With A Thousand Faces. Here’s how it translates for you in marketing…

Template for Your Longer Selling Story

Here is the template for you to construct your own selling story using the Hero’s Journey.

  • SeparationHow did your life used to be before your “calling”?
  • InitiationWhat specific incident happened to create your current business?
  • ReturnWhat has changed positively in your life as a result?

Advanced Tip – This type of business story is spectacular to use in your bio, but is generally too long for emails or social media.

Here’s an example of the business story I tell from the stage about Red Hot Copy using the condensed Hero’s Journey.

I’ll never forget the day I decided to quit my stable $50,000 a year job. On this particular day, the older assistant who really ran the company, had the radio on in her office. The news was blasting the unfolding details about the Columbine tragedy. It was unthinkable. We were following the story unfold of two social outcasts plotting out an evil plan to kill their fellow students and teachers. I was especially upset because I had two young sons in elementary school while I was stuck behind a desk, unable to leave.

See when my sons were first born in 1990 and 1992, I was a stay-at-home mom. We spent everyday reading, going to parks, visiting museums – just hanging out together. It was terrific. But with my divorce in the mid 1990s, I was forced to go to work each day, leaving them in the YMCA after school care program. I had been warned by two of my oldest son’s preschool teachers that he was a child who REALLY needed his mother or he could self-destruct…like those kids at Columbine.

The day Columbine happened was the day I realized I couldn’t continue being away from my kids anymore. I had to find an escape. It took some research and a leap of faith before I pulled together enough courage to quit to become a full-time writer.

Success wasn’t a straight path. I was learning how to create and run a business “on the job.” I quickly ran up $46,000 in debt and was incredibly tense. My new husband and I argued A LOT.

However, once I discovered copywriting, things changed dramatically. I found I had a passion for writing and marketing that I’d never known. In my quest to be one of the best, I went to live events, bought courses, and hired mentors. Red Hot Copy was born.

Word of my knack for the genre spread. I began doing work for visionaries like Mark Victor Hansen, Ali Brown, Marcia Wieder, Arielle Ford, Les Brown, and more. And I started teaching others how to harness the power of copy.

Today I’m considered by many to be a pioneer in the world of copywriting, especially with women and conscious entrepreneurs. I’ve been able to help thousands of business owners around the globe master the techniques of writing copy. . . boosting their personal freedoms as well!

Your exercise is this:

  1. Look at each phase of the Hero’s Journey in your own business.
  2. Apply what you learned at each phase.
  3. Craft it all into a business story.

You’ll tell the same story in different ways over and over again for the rest of your business. Seriously, take 15 minutes out of your day to start crafting your own special story. I promise you, prospects will relate and want to do business with you.

I confess my team and I have been beating our heads against the wall to design everything on our sales wishlist that we wanted. And we got pretty close.
