Can You Afford To Take A Month Off?

For most of us the answer is an emphatic, “NO!” (unless, of course, you have holiday-related business). But there are ways to make the traditionally slow December a balance of productivity, relaxation, and FUN. Here are a few tips to keep your marketing and mental state on track during the stressful ‘I don’t want to shop for one more gift’ season.
- Block It Out – Blocking your time is a staple of all time-management tricks. As the saying goes, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” But what belongs in your plan when everybody is pretty distracted with family gatherings and shopping? In order to be successful, you need to get out a piece of paper and write down everything you know you need to do this season. Include shopping, mailing, marketing, connecting, travel, etc.
- Flip On Your Radar – “They” are really trying to get your attention this month – all the businesses that compete to capture your holiday dollars, that is. So they are trotting out their best marketing materials. Are YOU? Pay extra close attention to some of the clever campaigns and phrases you see. Carry a pen and a small notepad with you at all times (I prefer spiral-bound index cards). Right down things you can add to your swipe file.
- Party Hearty – With all its social gatherings the holiday season is the ultimate connection time. Use it to visit with colleagues you don’t get to see in person during the year. Enjoy the relaxation. And DON’T feel guilty for not working!
