Is Reaching the Women’s Market Enough?

Hi there,

Last night I returned from a two-week speaking/learning junket on the east coast (Florida and Atlanta). There is NOTHING like being in a room of other people who are smart, ‘GET what you do’, and generously share what’s working for them in marketing now.

I got to have a few meals with my marketing idol, Joe Sugarman, and share the stage of a master copywriting panel with Dan Kennedy. (See more pix at And I met hundreds of other copywriters and marketers who resonated with my take on writing copy that speaks to women.

(Women and men process information differently and it makes all the difference in your marketing and your copy.)

It was a reinvigorating trip that totally reinforced what I teach in my upcoming virtual She Factor Copywriting Bootcamp.  Registration officially opens 11/11/11 (this Friday) but if you want a sneak peek visit

I have more new, streamlined material than ever after these last two weeks. I really can’t wait to get this next Bootcamp underway!

P.S. If you happen to check out the Bootcamp before the original launch date of 11/11/11, and it feels right for you, I advise you to register now so you’re eligible for the limited bonuses. Call this a sort of ‘hidden marketing test’…

Is Reaching the Women’s Market Enough?

By Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Expert Copywriting Strategist

Women are scrutinizing your brand looking for weaknesses and inconsistencies in your sales message. If women are spending $7 trillion on purchases can you afford to ignore how women think and engage in the marketplace? Just “Google” Dove and see how they get it right on their FB page. They know it’s more than soap, it’s knowing how women relate. Volvo has known for many years the relationship building advantage of quality when they market their automobiles.

Getting down to caveman basics, the first thing two potential matches do when they’re attracted to each other is to start flirting. Flirting is that electric stage of the game when you’re learning about each other, and deliberately trying to get the other person excited.

Works in marketing too. The more you take the time to learn about your prospect, the more connected you’ll be.

Here’s the challenge though. Women are vastly different from one another, and fit in multiple categories like

  • married,
  • unmarried,
  • divorced,
  • with kids,
  • without kids,
  • blue collar worker,
  • entrepreneur,
  • white collar worker . . . . the list is practically endless.

That makes market research A LOT MORE challenging. Yes, Volvo and Dove have figured that out.

(By the way, deeply segmenting your market is an area we spend quality hands-on time with at *The She Factor* Copywriting Bootcamp. The more you know about specifically who you’re trying to sell to, the better your chances of success.)

One of the things I figured out a long time ago is when you’re writing copy or any marketing materials, you need to be very specific about who you’re talking to. So rather than writing to a mob of people – your target market —

  • I recommend you write to a SINGLE PERSON – your TARKET.

Tarket is the term I coined as the singular of target market. It’s like your persona or character or avatar who is a representative of the majority of your ideal customers.

This technique is extremely connecting and relationship-building which is what women in particular look for. When you read copy that uses this device, it’s almost as if the writer were in the same room talking to the reader. Copywriting is actually an interactive activity. There is the writer or marketer – you – and the reader or prospect. As soon as the prospect doesn’t feel connected the relationship is over. Content is king, or should I say Queen.

I’m in love with an old flame…and it’s not even Valentine’s Day yet!

Here’s the deal, I have always been a big fan of being on the road, getting a brainstorm idea, then calling CopyTalk on my cell only to have my thoughts emailed back to me in a transcription form in a few hours! No more losing million dollar ideas for me.

But then after a cash flow crunch that often shows up with teenagers, I stopped the service. What a mistake.

Now I’m back with CopyTalk and couldn’t be happier. I forgot how easy they make life, especially for a fast-paced, mobile entrepreneur. They were happy to have me back as well. Because they know the quality of people in my community I’ve arranged for them to give you a very special price…one that is normally reserved for big wig corporations only. When you try out CopyTalk at, you get the service at a monthly discounted rate of $49.95 rather than the regular rate of $79.95. This service will add so much to your productivity, you won’t believe you ever lived without it.
