Sitting here at my desk eating freshly-made turkey and stuffing for lunch…and it’s not even Thanksgiving! My husband, John, got a new smoker and wanted to test out the turkey before the big day next week. Yum, yum. It came out great…moist and smoky.

The same phenomenon is true with copywriting. You can outsource it but you need to understand what works and what doesn’t. Or you’re wasting your money.

Attention-grabbing Sales Copy Every Time

When I ask my clients for a clear picture of what they offer they are often confused about what to say first. Don’t confuse your customer with too many choices. No clear choice, no action. We are talking about your Unique Selling Position (USP). I love the television commercial from Swifter attracting dust and dirt to their fuzzy fibers. Dirt gloms to the Swifter fibers and doesn’t let go. It’s a marvelously visual campaign that sells.

So I wonder what attracts your customers to your product or service?

What makes you different from your competition? Even before you draw them in you have to cast your net.  If they could cling to your fuzzy fibers you could shake them out into your sales funnel deeper and deeper.

Don’t worry about that just yet. Just try to get as many research materials as possible gathered in one place. I’ll have more to say on this subject of copywriting in other articles.

Whether you are writing your own copy or hiring someone background material about your business is a way to shake out the details. I ask my clients to do their homework so I can help them by having a better understanding about what they want. When I’m done we’re singing a chorus in harmony. Here’s a partial list of items you might collect even before you identify your target market:

  • Previously used ad materials
  • Examples of competitors’ ads and sales literature
  • All sales literature you have describing your product/service
  • Relevant articles or papers on your topic
  • Copies of speeches
  • Slide presentation scripts or videos
  • Press releases
  • User manuals, instruction manuals
  • Testimonials from satisfied customers
  • Marketing plans
  • Business plans
  • Anything internal describing your product/service
  • Any past issues of company newsletters
  • Statistics including sales figures for past 5 years
